Brick Repointing & Mortar Repairs

Mortar is exposed to weather year after year and can gradually deteriorate, crack or begin falling away from the joints between bricks. When the bricks themselves are still in good condition, brick repointing can restore the mortar joints without rebuilding the wall.

Repointing involves removing loose or deteriorated mortar to a suitable depth, cleaning the joint and replacing it with fresh mortar. The new mortar is then finished to suit the existing joint profile so the repaired area blends into the surrounding brickwork.

Good repointing isn't simply spreading new mortar over the face of an old joint. Proper preparation is important if the repair is going to look neat and last.

Signs Your Brickwork May Need Repointing

Mortar deterioration can start in isolated areas or affect larger sections of a wall. Some common signs that brickwork may need attention include:

  • Mortar crumbling or falling out between bricks
  • Deep or open gaps in mortar joints
  • Cracked mortar around individual bricks
  • Loose or damaged bricks
  • Weathered brickwork that needs restoration
  • Previous mortar repairs that are failing or poorly matched

Not every crack means the whole wall needs repointing. We can assess the affected area and determine whether localised mortar repairs, replacement bricks or more extensive repointing are appropriate.

Cracked & Damaged Brick Repairs

Sometimes the mortar is fine but individual bricks have cracked, chipped, deteriorated or been damaged by impact. In many cases these bricks can be carefully removed and replaced without disturbing the entire wall.

We remove the affected brickwork, prepare the surrounding area and install suitable replacement bricks. Where possible, we match the colour, texture, mortar and joint finish to help the repair blend naturally into the existing wall.

Restoring Older Brickwork

Older brickwork doesn't always need to be replaced. If the wall is generally sound, targeted repairs can often improve both its appearance and condition while retaining the character of the original brickwork.

Depending on the condition of the wall, restoration may involve repointing deteriorated mortar, replacing damaged bricks, repairing small sections of brickwork and correcting previous repairs that no longer match or perform properly.

The goal is straightforward: repair what's actually damaged and retain as much of the existing brickwork as practical.

Matching Existing Bricks & Mortar

A brick repair can be structurally sound and still look terrible if the replacement materials don't match. That's why matching the existing brickwork is an important part of repair and restoration work.

Where practical, existing bricks can be reused. If replacements are needed, we look for the closest available colour, texture and size. Older or discontinued bricks can sometimes be matched using reclaimed materials.

Mortar colour and joint profile matter just as much. We aim to match both as closely as practical so the repaired area doesn't unnecessarily stand out from the rest of the wall.

Our Brick Repair & Repointing Process

1. Assess the Brickwork

We first look at the damaged area to determine whether the issue involves mortar deterioration, damaged bricks, movement or a combination of problems.

2. Remove Damaged Material

Deteriorated mortar or damaged bricks are carefully removed while keeping unnecessary disturbance to the surrounding brickwork to a minimum.

3. Prepare the Repair

Joints and surrounding areas are cleaned and prepared before new mortar or replacement bricks are installed.

4. Repair & Repoint

Fresh mortar is applied and replacement bricks are installed where required. Joint profiles are finished to suit the existing brickwork.

5. Clean Up

Once the repair is complete, the work area is cleaned and all repair debris is removed from site.

Brick Repair & Repointing FAQs

What is brick repointing?

Brick repointing involves removing deteriorated mortar from the joints between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. The new joints are then finished to suit the existing brickwork.

How do I know if my brickwork needs repointing?

Common signs include crumbling mortar, open joints, loose mortar and areas where the mortar has noticeably recessed or deteriorated. An inspection can determine whether localised repairs or broader repointing are required.

Can individual damaged bricks be replaced?

Yes. Individual cracked, chipped or damaged bricks can often be carefully removed and replaced without rebuilding the entire wall.

Can you match my existing bricks?

We aim to find the closest practical match in colour, texture and size. Existing or reclaimed bricks may also be used where suitable, particularly when working with older brickwork.

Can you match the existing mortar?

We aim to match the existing mortar colour and joint profile as closely as practical so repaired areas blend naturally with the surrounding wall.

Do you take on small brick repair jobs?

Yes. Small brick repairs and restoration work are a core part of what we do, and no job is too small.
