Brisbane Brick Lintel Repair & Replacement
Professional Lintel Repairs Across Brisbane
Cracks appearing above a window or door? Rust stains around the brickwork? A rusted or failing lintel may be the cause.
Ezy Lay Brick & Block provides brick lintel repair and replacement across North Brisbane and Moreton Bay. We remove damaged or corroded lintels, install suitable replacements where required, and reinstate the surrounding brickwork for a neat, professional finish.
Left untreated, a deteriorating lintel can lead to cracking and movement in the brickwork above the opening and potentially more extensive repairs. If you've noticed stepped cracks, rust staining or movement around a window or door, it's worth having the area inspected by an experienced Brisbane bricklayer.
What Is a Brick Lintel?
A lintel is the horizontal structural support that spans an opening such as a window, door or garage. In many Brisbane brick homes, steel angle lintels are used to support the brickwork above these openings.
Over time, moisture can cause steel lintels to corrode and expand. This can lead to cracking, displaced mortar or movement in the surrounding brickwork. Concrete lintels can also deteriorate when the steel reinforcement inside begins to corrode.
Why Do Lintels Fail?
Moisture is one of the main causes of deterioration in steel lintels. If water is repeatedly able to reach the steel, corrosion can gradually develop beneath or behind the brickwork.
Homes in coastal areas such as Redcliffe, Woody Point and Sandgate can also experience harsher conditions due to their proximity to the coast. Older lintels may simply deteriorate after years of exposure to the elements.
As corrosion develops, the steel can expand and place pressure on the surrounding brickwork and mortar. This is why rusting lintels are often accompanied by cracking around windows and doors.
Signs Your Lintel May Need Repair or Replacement
Problems with lintels often become visible in the brickwork surrounding windows, doors and other openings. Common signs include:
- Stepped or diagonal cracking above windows and doors
- Rust stains around the lintel or mortar joints
- Cracked or deteriorating mortar above an opening
- Movement or bulging in the surrounding brickwork
- Visible corrosion on an exposed steel lintel
- Cracking or deterioration of a concrete lintel
These symptoms don't always mean the entire lintel needs replacing. An inspection can help determine what's causing the movement and whether repair or replacement is the appropriate solution.
How We Replace a Brick Lintel
Every lintel replacement is different, but the process generally starts with inspecting the opening, surrounding brickwork and existing lintel to determine the extent of the deterioration.
1. Inspect the Existing Lintel
We assess the condition of the lintel, the span of the opening and the surrounding brickwork before determining the appropriate repair.
2. Support the Brickwork
Where required, the brickwork above the opening is properly supported before the damaged lintel or surrounding bricks are removed.
3. Remove the Damaged Lintel
The affected brickwork is carefully dismantled and the existing lintel removed while minimising unnecessary disturbance to the surrounding wall.
4. Install the Replacement Lintel
A suitable replacement lintel is installed and positioned correctly before the brickwork is reinstated.
5. Rebuild & Match the Brickwork
Existing bricks are reused where practical, or suitable matching bricks are sourced. The mortar colour and joint finish are matched as closely as practical to the existing wall.
Matching Your Existing Brickwork
One of the most important parts of a lintel replacement is making the repaired area blend back into the existing wall.
Wherever possible, we reuse suitable original bricks removed during the repair. If additional bricks are required, we'll look for the closest available match. For older or discontinued brick styles, reclaimed bricks can sometimes provide a better match than a new product.
We also take care to match the existing mortar colour and joint profile as closely as practical, helping the finished repair blend naturally with the surrounding brickwork.
How Much Does Lintel Replacement Cost in Brisbane?
The cost of a lintel repair or replacement depends on several factors, including the width of the opening, access to the area, the condition of the surrounding brickwork, the type of lintel required and how much brickwork needs to be removed and reinstated.
The easiest way to get an idea of what's involved is to send through a few clear photos of the affected area along with your suburb. We can then take a look and advise on the next step.

Brick Lintel Repair FAQs
How do I know if my lintel needs replacing?
Common warning signs include stepped cracking above windows or doors, rust staining, deteriorating mortar and visible corrosion. An inspection is the best way to determine whether repair or replacement is required.
Can you replace lintels above windows and doors?
Yes. We repair and replace lintels supporting brickwork above windows, doors and other openings.
Can you match my existing bricks?
We reuse suitable original bricks wherever practical and can also source matching or reclaimed bricks when additional material is required. Exact matches aren't always possible with older brickwork, but we aim for the closest practical finish.
How long does a lintel replacement take?
It depends on the size of the opening, access and the amount of brickwork involved. Many straightforward residential lintel repairs can be completed relatively quickly, while larger or more complex jobs may take longer.
